Do I Need Income Protection Insurance?

A lot of people think insurance is not necessary, but they don’t realize what it’s really made for.  Paying for insurance is not something that gives immediate returns.  It is not a type of investment that brings in money from time to time, but it secures individuals’ or entire families’ financial needs in the most unlikely event of illness or injury, such that the policy holder is unable to work and continue receiving income. This is the main purpose of income protection insurance, and though not that many people realize it, its importance remains applicable in most cases.

If you’re thinking of income protection insurance and trying to decide whether or not it’s for you, consider things that are likely to impact your existing investments, if any.  For example, if you own a house, you cannot possibly go without anything to continue your mortgage payments, just in case you are unable to earn your usual income.  With income protection, you can be assured that this asset is protected because insurance will take care of your payments.

Should you get Income Protection Insurance?

Another reason you should get income protection insurance is if you’re self-employed. If you were to work in a company, you are likely to get sickness benefits and you will continue to receive your income as long as you file the necessary papers for a leave of absence.  If you are self-employed, you will not receive such benefits, but you can protect yourself, your family and your assets through income protection insurance.

If you are the sole breadwinner of your family, or if you have no other source of income aside from what you have in the present, you should definitely consider income protection insurance.  This is a policy that will ensure your basic expenses are taken care of, from your utility bills to a car you just bought to your health insurance and other things that you cannot afford not to spend on.

Do I Need Income Protection InsuranceYour lifestyle should also be a major concern as you decide whether or not you need income protection insurance.  You may have another source of income where you do not need to work or be physically present, such as a business another family member attends to.  But if you think you cannot forgo of your passion for traveling or any other activity that you have been used to, you need to get insurance in order to ensure that you will not be deprived of your simple joys.

Another reason you’d like to get income protection insurance is if you hold a highly hazardous job.  For example, if you spend your regular working hours attending to wild animals, the perils you face are way more serious compared to the risks that come with a regular office job.  This means, you should actually get income protection insurance, considering you are are at risk for most of the time while you’re at work. But it doesn’t mean that if you work in an office, you no longer need protection.  It simply means that for greater risks, you should get wider coverage. Of course, you need to pay more for a policy provides more coverage.

Considering not-very-promising conditions in economies around the world, it is not surprising to know that income protection insurance will not be cheap.  But when it comes to securing the future, cost should not be an issue, as long as the policy has been carefully examined in terms of coverage.  People spend a lot on different luxuries of life, but it’s unfortunate that many almost cannot see the value in investing in insurance.  Income protection is particularly important as it impacts practical living following an illness or injury that results in loss or temporary cessation of employment.
